Why I ride?

Why I (we) ride? Why this question now?
I wanted to write an answer for a long time but the lazy in me prevented till this day. So coming to the answer now..

Is it that we don’t have anything else to do?

Is it about doing something adventurous bcos we are young?

Is it our way to run away from the mundane life?

Is it the way to achieve the ultimate nirvana?

Is it to rejuvenate our lifeless soul?

The answer is sometimes YES and sometimes NO for some questions and NOT yes for ALL question and NOT no for ALL question at ANYtime.

Sometimes riding 2 wheels helps me to speak to myself. I feel like taking myself to the challenges on my own.. I choose the terrain and thus I choose challenges. Going places on 2 wheels enhances the value of destination.
Lemme illustrate with an example: You go to a temple and see the deity and come back, let us assume the whole process  takes 10mins. In another case, you wait for hours.. thinking about the temple/god, feeling the Qs and after a lot of sweating you see the deity and come out. The kind of happiness ( experience) while seeing god in the second case is what we(I) feel when biking.

In biking .. it’s always not about the destination, it is mostly about the journey..
it is about the prevailing weather when we ride..
it is about the time of day which freezes in our mind..
it is the tarmac underneath which we feel through our tyres..
it is the fresh air which fills our helmet when the visor is lifted..
it is the vibration of our engine which sets rhythm to our thoughts..
it  is about the hot tea we have on road side joints..
it is about the reliance on a complete stranger for routes..
it is about taking a small break and stretching our body..
it is about the respect which fellow motorists give it to you..
it is about leaning on a twisty in ghat road..
it is everything which brings happiness to me..

To be honest, am not good at expressing and it becomes worse if I have to express in words. So… it is lot more than what I wrote above and thats why i love(live) biking!

A Short dash to Lonavala

After our Monsoon trip to Kondane caves, we have not done any bike trip. We were planning for a two day trip to Malshej-Bhimashankar(MAL-BHI) but it was getting delayed for a long time. In between we managed to catch a day and started for Trimbak but it got ended miserably because our Bullet Pandi(Pravin)’s robust bike failed during the trip.

After that our worklife engaged us fully , not even giving us time to think of  any bike trip. Both of us were put in Aromatics Turn around. Pravin promised that we’ll do our MAL-BHI trip on 8th and 9thDec'11. Destiny has something else in its mind, the startup of  NSU( New Solvent Unit, I dunno how this plant is named New when that looks older like a pre-independece era plant). I got my leave sanctioned but pravin got struck in plant.

I was totally pissed off.. with 2 days of leave in my hand and no hopes of any trip.
I managed to service my bike and gave new look with the latest Rear fender.
Finally Pravin managed to get one day off on Sunday. With MAL-BHI dream shattered, we started for an oneday trip to Lonavala.

Trip :

Starting Point :  Mankhurd-Sion Fly over
Start Time      :  0700, I arrived at 0720!
Riders            : Who else? Me and Pravin
Total distance : 150 Km
Places visited  : Bhushy Dam, Amby Valley and Lohagad Fort

Skyscrapers- Enroute - Palm beach road

We had our first break and Breakfast at Dattaguru near Panvel. Fuelled our steeds in HP pump , NH4. Slowly we started moving in super smooth NH4. Our speed never exceeded 60 km/hr. It was very boring to ride like that in such a nice road. As always pravin is not yielding to any persuasion. We reached lonavala and went directly to Bushy dam, there is nothing to write about this dam except that it is a most sought after place during monsoon.

with New Rear-Fender

We went ahead to tiger’s leap and I suggested going further till Amby valley. Its this stretch which made up for the otherwise not-so-exciting trip. Being a place which is frequented by the whos-who of country, road was well maintained and was super curvy. After leaning our bikes for 20 kays,we reached Amby valley. As obvious, we dint enter amby valley and rode further to check out sahara city.

Enroute - Amby valley

While coming back, we stopped at a hairpin bend and tried to photograph our “Bend it like Rossi” moment. It came out well !
A Royal lean by Bullet

Bend it..
Our Next destination was Loheghad fort, we had our lunch at McD and traced NH4 again. We reached the otherside of Lohagad fort which made us to walk more than 6km. Am badly missing my GPS.

Single and lonely - part 1

Single and lonely - part 2
From top
Climbing the path was very difficult ( only for me, pravin was climbing with full enthu). We started climbing at 3 pm and reached the top at 5 pm. After some photographs and “walk the talk” moment with pravin and we descended .
We reached the bottom after dark and we need to ride all the way in dark( It always happens).
With Pravin leading and me just slowly tailing reached JNPT junction and finally home.

Highlight :
1. Road to Amby valley is well laid. and I'll revisit this place again and ll try my best to enter amby valley.
2. Lonavala is best visited during monsoon. Please dont go during summer, you will regret.
3. All said, this is the only easiest getaway from mumbai which can be completed in one day.
4. Lohagad fort can also be reached easily by taking a route from pavana lake. This will save couple of hours.

Trip to " Land of Strawberries"

Prologue:
My childhood friends (Hari and Satish) were planning for a long time to visit my place and to roam around Mumbai. The Last time they visited Mumbai was on 26/11/2008! Yes, that dreadful day along with those dreaded terrorists. That time we couldn’t roam around and the fun factor was totally missing. This time they wanted to enjoy the trip to the fullest.
They didn’t have any specific place in mind and handed over the job of picking a location to me. I suggested Alibaug Beach as a one day bike trip, however, we dropped it as me and Hari will be in the land of beaches, Goa, for five days prior to the day of this travel. After lot of suggestions from various people, I zeroed on Mahabaleswar. This trip is specially for tasting those strawberry cream
I wanted to do a bike trip to Mahableswar, however was skeptical about doing it with a pillion (Hari never rode bike on a Highway). So, we started searching for buses, luckily, we dint get any booking and the availability of buses were not in line with our schedule. Hence, we decided to do a bike trip. We needed another bike and I didn’t worry much about as I had my friend Naveen. He didn’t hesitate a moment and gave the mighty HUNK.
However, the mighty Hunk was not at its mighty best and we had couple of challenges. First the bike was not in best condition; we took the bike to Service center and made it ready for the long ride. The second was a shocker, the bike’s insurance expired and we got worried.
What we do now? Call off the trip? No way… Naveen had his  insurance from ICICI Lombard. We renewed it online and got the print out. All these things were happening just the previous evening of our trip. On top of these, Satish is not used to riding this kind of bike (he is riding Splendor for the past 8 yrs). So, we decided to take a short trip to south Mumbai to fulfill two purposes, one is Sathish getting used to the bike and the other one is seeing the Gateway of India (which they were not able to see last time they came due to the terrorist attack). After a brief posing session in front of Gateway Of India and Taj we went to McDonald’s for dinner. We reached home around 11.30 PM .
Day 1:
We decided to start at 05:30 AM and reach there before 2 pm, however, not all plans get implemented, isn’t it? We got up late and started from our home only at 06:45 AM. We decided to go via NH4 as the route is relatively easier, though it was a little long. I was leading and Satish was tailing slowly. Hari was pillion with sathish till Lonavala. Our first stop was Lonavala. We reached there at 0850 AM and had a heavy breakfast. After 30 mins of loading and unloading, we resumed our journey. This time Hari sat pillion with me, as satish was riding slowly with the pillion.
We were riding at a decent speed and reached Dehu rd( Pune bypass) at 10:30 AM. Most of the time, I sped away and slowed down later for Sathish to catch us. We crossed the Pune bypass at 11:25 AM with some intermitted stopping for Sathish to catch us. The best part of this stretch was riding through the Katraj tunnel (which is1.8 km long). I was a bit nervous inside the tunnel as the light was very minimal and cars were zipping past us at 100+ speed.
After catching up at the NH4 again, we asked Sathish to ride a bit faster to reach the destination before scheduled time. From hereon, Our superfast highway cruising started. I was cruising at 100+ speed with a pillion and was cutting through the car traffic at a insane speed. At one straight stretch I throttled to the maximum, my bike reached a speed of 113 Kmph with a pillion! I tried again and again, but the top speed didn’t cross the 113 mark.

After some heavy riding, we reached Khambakthi ghat at 12:20 pm. We snacked and refreshed ourselves. Now Hari shifted to Sathish’s bike and we started ascending the Khambakthi ghat. It is always a pleasure to ride on the ghats. I love it for the twists and turns it offers, just like our life. The joy doubles when the road is one way and super curvy.  We covered the entire ghat section at a good pace. Now we are back to the straight stretch of the road. I was bit worried about the top speed of my bike as it dint cross the 113 mark. So, this time I tried crouching and twisted the throttle to the maximum…aayila(sorry for the Marati)! I reached a speed of 122 kmph. I couldn’t explain how happy I was seeing that figure; however, I didn’t want to extend it further as the figure totally perplexed me.
Finally we took the right turn from NH4 at 01:00pm and started towards mahabaleswar. We reached panchgani at 01:40 pm and was looking for a Ganapathi mandhir which had a huge statue of Ganesh. We visited one mandhir which was mistaken to be the one which Hari’s mom told. On inquiring, we found that one was in Wai which we crossed before reaching Panchangi and decided to visit it on the way back. Hari wanted to visit that Mahaganapathi mandhir which his mother told him to visit without fail.
Around 03:30 pm we reached Mahabaleswar and booked a room near Mahabaleswar bus stand. We kept our luggage at the room and had our lunch at 05:00 PM in a Punjabi restaurant opposite to our lodging!
After the long and tiring journey that we had, we decided to take some rest and visit the spots in the evening. When we got up after our short nap, it was already 7 PM and it was very dark outside.
We decided to visit the Veena lake which was the boating place and eat something. Sathish was down with cold and mild fever due to which he didn’t join us. So, myself and Hari went to Veena Lake. The boating was closed, however, we were allowed to inside the lake and we took few pictures. After some posing session, we went downhill to do the Most important activity of this trip.
We went to Bagicha juice center to taste the strawberry cream. We took one strawberry cream and one milk shake. I cannot explain the taste in words, it is worth every mile we traveled. You should visit Mahabaleswar just for this strawberry stuff. Bagicha’s are the best in business and I would recommend this as a must do activity for anyone visiting Mahableswar.
We returned home to find Sathish back to his normal state. Me and Sathish went outside to have dinner, as Hari decided to stay indoors heavy with the strawberry cream and juice we had at the Bagicha’s. After the dinner we came back and Sathish started telling his failed love story (which was hilarious for Me and Hari as he always adds some additional flavor to whatever he tells).

Day 2:
After listening to Sathish's story the other nite, we woke up around 7 AM and left the room by 9 AM. After enquiring the locals about the nearest places to visit we zeroed on Elphinstine point, Lodwick's point and Elephant Head. Elphinstine point had a breath taking view, me and Hari wanted to go down to take a picture, however, our caretaker Sathish was against it and started yelling at us. After the routine of posing we had biscuit and tea. We started walking towards Lodwick's point and Elephant Head.

After trekking for about 2 KMS, we reached Lodwick point. Lodwick is an English general who made Mahableswar a popular spot. After spending some time there we started walking to Elephant Head, which is a point as well. The path to Elephant Head was scenic and it had a steel fencing in either side of it.  It is one of the most beautiful places which we saw on the trip. We took a lot of pictures there and started trekking back to Elphinstine point (since we have our bike parked there). After enjoying some breath-taking views, we returned back breathless.
We checked out the hotel around 11 AM and started to Panchgani. My bike was running in reserve for the last 5 Kms and we had to fill its tummy. The Bharat Petroleum near the bus stand had a power outage and none of the petrol pumps in Mahableshwar were functional due to that. Hence we decided to visit other points with the limited fuel in my bike and fill petrol on the way.
Next, we stopped at Kates point. This one was very beautiful( like its name) and I will recommend this as a must see for anyone visiting Mahableshwar. It had a scenic view and you could get a fantabulous view of the valleys and Sayadhiri range. We had our delayed breakfast at this point and took some wonderful pictures.
We resumed our journey towards Panchgani and on the way we visited Mapro gardens  to  taste strawberry juice again. Here we bought some Strawberry extracts and Jams which increased our bag’s weight by 5 kgs. We started our journey towards Panchgani with this increased luggage and after the downhill ride, we reached Panchngani. We hoped to find fuel atleast here, however, we were left disappointed. We visited the Tabletop in Panchgani. Tabletop is a vacant land and it has some view points.  Here, one has to be careful because there are lots of Horse cart riders who will be pestering you to take a ride for huge price. One particular horse rider who asked us to pay 400 Rs, came down till 30 Rs, however, due to shortage of time we  declined and left the place.

We started from Table Top to our next destination, which is Wai. Downhill with a 80 kg pillion was really adventurous. We finally filled our fuel tanks in Wai. We paid our visit to Mahaganapati mandir, which Hari’s mom insisted us to go. This temple is situated at the bank of river Krishna and the small bridge adjacent to the temple adds beauty to the location. The Ganapati statue was really big and way different from any other temple. Hari wanted to take a picture of the statue, however, it was turned down by the priest.
After the Darshan, we went to a nearby hotel and had the much needed lunch. We finished our lunch around 0440 pm. We were all tired but we were determined to reach Mumbai before 10 PM.  I asked satish to maintain 70+ consistently. Our return journey to Mumbai started, we were cruising closely at a very good speed and managed to maintain 70+ Avg speed. Sathish was up to the task this time and we avoided frequent stoppage. Within an hour and fifteen minutes we reached Pune from Wai. We stopped at the outskirts of Pune for chai and much needed relaxation.

While coming back, we bypassed the entire Khambhakthi ghat through a lengthy tunnel. The Sun started to take a nap and darkness was filling the place as were reaching Lonavala. We reached lonavala around 0715 pm and had some snacks there. We ve to drive another 90+ km to reach home.(We almost covered the last 150 in 2 hrs).
The next stretch of the journey was very challenging as it was really dark and the highway was devoid of any light and speeding vehicles. Another challenge was, the Hunk stopped frequently. I took the lead and Sathish was following me. I must admit, this was the toughtest part of the entire trip as fatigue creeped in.
Our average speed has dropped drastically and we managed to reach panvel bypass around 0900 pm. It was really disheartening to see Hari’s face, as his back started hurting... We avoided Panvel rush by reaching Vashi through JNPT and Palm Beach road.

Atlast after a long trip of 600kms, we reached Chembur and stopped at a restaurant. All of was were totally worn out and dead tired. We freshened up at the restaurant . After the heavy dinner we reached home, exhausted and drained!

Some of the highlights about this trip are:
1.       The superb strawberry cream we had at The Bagicha's, Mahabaleswar.
2.   I cruised continuously at 100+ speed with a pillion and my bike dint show any sign of engine over-heating.
3.       My GPS, which was our saviour for most part of the journey. It helped us to locate where we are, to calculate the remaining distance for destination and also for updating our location on Google latitude.
4.       My Co-rider sathish, drove very well and displayed his never-say-die attitude.
5.    My pillion rider - Hari, who never complained about our riding and never asked for a frequent break. He is an epitome of true pillion rider.
On the whole, this was a fantastic trip with my childhood friends whom I know for more than 20 years. My Bro Koti and Rajesh really missed this trip.

Before finishing this blog, I like to quote the words of Robert Prisig: “..Vacationing on a motorcycle in a way that is completely different from the other. In a car you’re always in a compartment, and through car window everything you see is just more TV.You’re passive observer and it is all moving by you boringly in a frame….. On a motorcycle the frame is gone. You’re completely in contact with it all. You’re in the scene not just watching but very present there…” thats why we like to explore this world in motorcycle!
Come again .. we’ll explore some other exotic location real soon.

Konkan Exploration

It’s been itching for some time to go for a long ride. Tentatively a ride to ganapatipule was decided and discussed with my riding buddies about that. Though everyone was interested, but fixing the date was very difficult. Later the destination was changed to harihareshwar due to the date issues.
Now everyone backed off again citing dates. The plan was almost scrapped but luck has come in the form of pravin. He is game for any destination provided it is done thru bike.
We decided the date as 24th Feb. and got ready for it. Just on the previous day, I bought the protective gloves and bungee cord.
After browsing thru xbhp and some googling, we zeroed on the route.
The plan is to start from Mumbai at early morning and reach harihareshwar before dark and stay there at MTDC resort and return next day. Our onward journey is thru kashid, murud, diveagar, shrivardhan and return is thru mangaon via NH17.
After my evening shift, I managed to catch some sleep and got ready at 0600 am. With some initial hiccups in my bike, I reached Mankhurd junction at 0630 AM. Pravin was already waiting for me. We discussed about our next stop and started the journey officially.
Our first stop is HPC petrol pump at panvel. After filing the tank with a meager 8 litre, my pocket was lighter by 500 rs. 500 rs for just 8 litre, what the heck is this? Back in my workplace I handle the same fluid in thousand kilolitres and its monetary value never surprised me.
Now back to the business, we decided to take breakfast at Wadkal junction. We were cruising at a low speed of 40- 50 kmph in NH17. I asked pravin to lead, so that I won’t sped away and lose him. Heavy traffic before pen separated pravin from me.
He called me to inform that he already reached the point and asked my whereabouts. I was quite surprised to know our bullet pandi has reached the destination so quickly. I ripped my bike and reached the wadkal and was searching for him at the junction. He was nowhere to be seen and later came to know that He mistook pen for wadkal and entered the pen town for breakfast.
After a simple breakfast, we headed to khashid beach. Pravin forgot to take his camera’s memory card along with him. So, we decided to go to alibaug, to buy one SD card.
Though we were not riding at very high speed, we reached khashid very quickly compared to our last ride. Khashid was still scenic with its white sand under scorching sun. After some photo shoot we headed for Murud- Jangira.
Kashid and woods

Bullet pandi!

Our plan was to enjoy all the beaches enroute. So we dint skip even the lesser known nandgaon beach.  Around 1 pm with lot many breaks, we reached rajpuri (Jangira fort) area. We had our lunch at a dhaba. I was bit taken back when that dhaba owner spoke to me in Tamil.
We took the 2 pm ferry to fort. The ferry driver later turned as a guide explained the history of the fort. We could see lot of school kids coming to this spot for excursion.
On the way to Murud

After the detour, we were back to the ferry station. We loaded our bikes into the ferry and reached dighe at 5pm. Kudos to those ferry riders, they loaded the mighty bullet into the ferry without any damage.

ferrying bikes from Murud to Dighe

Ride from dighe to diveagar was scenic and our first encounter with village road started here. We went to ganapati temple at diveagar and later went to the beach.
Diveagar Beach

Diveagar

Awesome road between Diveagar and Shrivardhan

Diveagar beach was one of the best. Perfect for camping and weekend getaways. We wanted to stay for a longer time but we ve to reach the destination before dark. After having a tea, we took a sea side road to harihareshwar.
After sometime, we ascended a ghat which left us spellbound for the view it has offered. We could not resist but to immerse ourselves in her beauty. We freeze the frame in our cameras but no photo can do a justice. The road was awesome along the rim of mountain with a sea on the other side to make it more stunning. I strongly recommend this place to everyone.
Our speed has dropped as we were mesmerized in her beauty. Slowly the dark has engulfed the sky; we are yet to cross the shrivardhan. We enquired the route to shrivardhan from local and proceeded further. Just before entering shrivardhan, we were asked by the local to take an alternative route to avoid shrivardhan market and reach harihareshwar bypassing.
The route we took was very narrow and it was not having any signs of civilization. My GPS was also not showing any road. After sometime, two middle aged guys helped us with the route. They said it is 4 km before we reach a petrol pump. But those 4 km were like an hour long journey. No vehicles in the sight and twisty mountain road without tarmac. We finally reached the petrol pump. Pravin topped up his tank for the fear of roads it has offered.
Right after crossing the diveagar, our mobile lost network. We cannot afford to separate. After some route enquiry, we resume our journey. Lucky that I ve learnt some Marathi to manage communication with the locals. This time we came across a diversion mentioning harihareshwar 14 km. Our ride thru those pitch dark road was a nightmare. That was the first time we were riding in the ghat in pitch dark road. Lucky that the tarmac was not very bad. We rode very cautiously and reached harihareshwar after 30 mins.
We booked a room for 1000rs and had our dinner at a seaside restaurant. There was no mobile network of airtel and reliance in harihareshwar. But we were blessed with those two networks only. We searched for a phone booth and found one. Informed our parents about our network issue and that we reached our destination safely.

Day2

We got up early and after taking bath we went to the temple. The location of this temple reminded tiruchendur in TN. We climbed a small hill near the temple and descended to the sea. After photo session, we returned to the hotel.
We ordered breakfast in the same restaurant where we took our dinner. At night we couldn’t see the proximity of restaurant to the sea. It was one of the best places to have food.

Shrivardhan Beach
We check'd-out the resort and started for shrivardhan. While going back, we were amazed to find the road that we managed to cross at night.
We went to shrivardhan temple and later to the beach. All these beaches along the konkan are pristine and way better than beaches in TN. After spending some time in beach, we started our return journey with a heavy heart.

It’s almost 11 am, we ve to reach Mumbai before dark. Just before exiting shrivardhan town, bullet developed some problem. We took the vehicle to nearby mechanic. After a lot of struggle, our bike got ready at 0215 pm.
Attending Bullet
Long way to go!
We decided to take lunch at mangaon and started our return journey. Road from shrivardhan to mangaon is being laid. We found it equally exiting and difficult to traverse on this stretch. We crossed 4-5 ghats with numerous hairpin bends. 60% of the stretch was covered with gravel. This stretch helped us to develop ourselves as an ATR (all terrain rider!).
We had our heavy lunch at Anand bhuvan hotel, Mangaon and resumed our journey. Riding thru the NH17 was boring and that too at a speed of 50 kmhr, it was boring to the core. I pestered pravin to increase the speed to atleast 60kmhr but our bulleteer is no mood to listen.
Somewhere after Pen
We slowly munched miles and reached jnpt junction at dusk. We decided to take JNPT, palmbeach and reach vashi. But pravin took a wrong right turn and reached panvel Mcd junction. I continued onto JNPT and reached Palm Beach. Later we rejoined at nerul and bid goodbye.
Total distance 396+29 km
I reached home at 0830pm. This completes our pilgrimage cum adventurous trip of 425 km to an end. Overall the trip left us with an everlasting impression on konkan coast. We decided to explore konkan coast further southwards in our next trip.
